Historical background

THRACE - THRACIAN CHERSONESE - CHERRONESOS

(4th century BC)

Cherronesos seems to have been located at the entrance to the Propontis on the Isthmus of the Cherchonese of Thrace. It seems that this region can be identified with the city of Cardia and its surroundings. Cardia, an important city, was founded by Milesian settlers. The city was finally destroyed by Lysimachus in 309 BC before being rebuilt under the name of Lysimacheia. The city controlled the trade that passed through the region between the Aegean Sea and Pont-Euxin.
