Historical background

TUNISIA - FRENCH PROTECTORATE - LAMINE BEY

(AH 1362-1376 / 1943-1957)

Lamine Bey (1881-1962) was the last bey of the Husseinite dynasty. He acceded to the throne following the dismissal of Moncef Bey by General Giraud on May 14, 1943. The legitimacy of the "Bey of the French" was highly contested by Tunisians and it was not until the death of his predecessor Moncef Bey that he is recognized by the population. He then approaches the Neo-Destour. Following independence in 1956, he tried to establish a constitutional monarchy but was overthrown by Habib Bourguiba who proclaimed the republic in 1957. He ended his life in Tunis in extreme destitution under police surveillance..
