Coments on the condition:
Très bel exemplaire, sur un flan un tout petit peu court, avec de très beaux reliefs et une frappe particulièrement bien centrée et vigoureuse. Patine de collection ancienne, légèrement grattée par endroits

Obverse description : Tête stylisée à droite, la chevelure hirsute, le cou marqué par un triangle ; légende autour.

Reverse description : Croix grecque cantonnée d’un globule dans chaque canton ; légende autour.

Commentary


Selon le SCMF, une vingtaine de deniers ont ce type de revers aux annelets en cantonnement de la croix. Aucune de ces monnaies ne correspond à notre denier. La comparaison des légendes, pourtant bien venues sur notre exemplaire, n’est pas plus concluante.
Une fois de plus en l’état actuel de nos connaissances, il ne semble pas possible de proposer une attribution satisfaisante pour ce denier.

Many Merovingian coins, badly minted, with very poor or inexplicit epigraphy, cannot be attributed to a particular mint. Too rare coins unfortunately have the same problem. The attributions being based on often old works, a coin unknown at the time will often have difficulty in being attributed, unless it is possible to read the mint or find the name of the mint and compare with its production in the workshops where he minted coins....
