Historical background

BERRY - LORDSHIP OF ISSOUDUN - RAOUL II

(1127-1164)

It was Eudes the Elder, lord of Déols, who united Issoudun to his possessions in 1026. Eudes I, his grandson (1052-1085) became independent. Raoul II takes place between Geoffroy (1092-1127) and Eudes II (1164-1167). The reigns of Eudes III (1167-1199) and Raoul III (1199-1212) were very eventful. Issoudun fell for the homage of Henri II Plantagenet, but Philippe II Auguste seized the city in 1187. The possession of the city was confirmed to the King of France by the treaty of Azay-le-Rideau in 1189. The new King of England, Richard Coeur de Lion, took over the city in 1194. In 1200, by the Treaty of Le Goulet, Jean-sans-Terre ceded Issoudun to the King of France, Philippe II. In 1212, after the death of Raoul III, Guillaume de Chauvigny, husband of Mahaut, sister of Raoul III, became lord of Issoudun.
