Commentary

Historical background

BOHEMIA - KINGDOM OF BOHEMIA - JOHN I THE BLIND

(1310-1346)

Jean de Luxembourg, known as Jean l'Aveugle (1296-1346), is the son of Henry VIII. He first married Elizabeth of Bohemia, daughter of Wenceslas II. King of Bohemia in 1310, he was a great friend of Philip VI and the father-in-law of John II the Good. Born in 1296, he was killed at the battle of Crécy in 1346. His heroic death inspired the Black Prince who always wore a helmet surmounted by ostrich feathers, in memory of Jean the Blind who himself wore them on his helmet . He is the father of Charles IV of Luxembourg (1316-1378), King of Bohemia and of the Romans in 1346 and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1355.
