Exemplaire sur flan légèrement ovale et irrégulier. Beau portrait à l’usure régulière. Frappe un peu faible au revers sur le camp prétorien

Obverse translation : “Tiberius Claudius Cæsar Augustus Pontifex Maximus Tribunicia Potestas” (Tibère Claude césar auguste grand pontife, revêtu de la puissance tribunitienne).

Reverse legend : IMPER RECEPT DANS UN CARTOUCHE.
Reverse description : Vue du camp prétorien avec la vision du mur d’enceinte, orné de deux ouvertures, surmonté de cinq créneaux avec deux tourelles, elles aussi crénelées, et d’un temple distyle avec fronton triangulaire ; devant une femme armée d’une lance avec une enseigne.
Reverse translation : “Imperatore receptio” (La réception de l’empereur).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3. Très beau portrait inaugural. Revers historiquement important. Deux petites contremarques dans le champ au droit, de chaque côté du portrait.

Claude was born in 10 BC in Lyon. Became emperor by chance after the assassination of Caligula in 41, he is despite physical flaws a great emperor and a good administrator, but remains dominated by his wives and his freedmen who hold the reality of power. In 50, after his marriage with his niece, Agrippina, he adopted his son Nero to the detriment of Britannicus, his own son born of the union with Messalina. He dies assassinated by Agrippina who serves him a dish of poisoned mushrooms.
