Obverse description : Buste lauré et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à gauche, vu de trois quarts en avant, tenant un sceptre transversal de la main droite (F*5).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Pius Augustus”, (Constantin pieux auguste).

Reverse legend : SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI/ TF|*// PLG.
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié, nu le manteau sur l’épaule, debout à gauche, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti”, (Au compagnon le Soleil invincible).
Commentary
Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Buste inhabituel. Cuirasse et épaulière cloutées. Ptéryges larges. Au revers les lettres dans le champ TF pourraient être les initiales de “Temporum Felicitas” pour les temps heureux. C’est le deuxième exemplaire signalé. Même coin de droit que l’exemplaire du Kunsthistorisches Museum de Vienne (coll. Voetter, n° 67847, 3,54 g.). Prendra le numéro 584b dans le Supplément 3 du Bastien.

Augustus
Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
