Miletus, founded in the 12th century BC, had been the seat of the Ionian Confederation. During the war of liberation, it was crushed in 494 BC. Its cult of Apollo was renowned throughout Asia Minor. Its settlers founded, among others, the colonies of Abydos, Cyzicus, Sinope and Panticapaeum. Coinage of the Apollo type lasted until the 2nd century BC..
