Obverse translation : “Rex Iuba”, (Roi Juba).

Reverse legend : INSCRIPTION NÉO-PUNIQUE (IOBA/ HMMLKT).
Reverse description : Temple octostyle surmonté d’un fronton triangulaire, posé sur quatre marches ; un globule au centre.

Sur cet exemplaire, au droit le nom du roi est normal et le temple ne présente pas de globule au centre.

(60-46 BC)

Juba I succeeded his father Hiempsal II in 60 BC Renowned for his arrogance and cruelty, he was noticed by Cicero and then quickly became Caesar's enemy. In the civil war between Pompey and Caesar, he sided with the former. Beaten at Thapsus in 46 BC, he fled, then was killed or committed suicide. His kingdom was conquered and did not become independent again until more than twenty years later with his son, Juba II.
