Commentary

Historical background

PSEUDO-IMPERIAL COINAGE IN THE NAME OF VALENTINIAN III - VISIGOTHS OR BURGUNDIANS

(end of the 5th century)

Many triens imitate the type of imperial coins of Valentinian III (425-455). Traditionally those with victory in profile are attributed to the Visigoths and Burgundians, those with victory in front of the Ostrogoths. The pseudo-imperial series attributed to the Visigoths are dated 417-507 for Gaul and 507-580 for Spain.
