Exemplaire sur un flan ovale et irrégulier, décentré sur l’ancre. Magnifique tête de Gorgone servie par une très belle patine de collection ancienne avec des reflets dorés. Conserve au revers la plus grande partie de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Commentary


Le droit est bien l’ancre dans cette série et pas la tête de méduse. Au droit, le mollusque, décrit comme une écrevisse, est incertain. Sur cet exemplaire, tous les détails composant la tête de Méduse sont bien visibles ainsi que les serpents qui sortent de la chevelure.

(4th century BC)

Apollonia Pontica, located on Pont-Euxin was a Milesian colony. The city was famous for its temple of Apollo and its colossal statue, the work of Kalamis. When Lucullus captured the city in 73 BC, he had the statue of the god transported to Rome.
